Mylasa, Euromos, Herakleia and Iassos
The once proud cities of Caria are hidden in the countryside. The present-day town of Milas stands on the foundations of the ancient city of Mylasa, earliest capital of Caria. Much of the ancient city has been built over, but Roman walls, Byzantine columns and early pre-Ottoman mosques blend into the fabric of the old town with some beautiful examples of prosperous 19th century houses and the caravanseray, all worth seeing. The village comes to town on Tuesday; market day, giving a glimpse of older ways of life. Iassos was the wealthy fishery and port in Roman times, and excavations have brought to light the foundations of the city. The Carian outpost of Herakleia, lies on the banks of Lake Bafa set in the legendary landscape of Latmos mountains. The temple of Euromos stands tall and lonely, amongst the fields and trees that hide the city.
